History of Batu Pahat

Batu Pahat, also known as Bandar Penggaram, has a rich and fascinating history dating back to the 15th century. The name, which means Batu Pahat in Malay, originates from a legend during the rule of the Kesultanan Melaka. According to local folklore, in 1456, the Kesultanan Melaka sent a naval expedition to confront Siam, who at the time was attempting to invade Johor. After a fierce battle, the Siamese forces retreated to the coast, now known as Batu Pahat. Desperate and exhausted, they allegedly attempted to carve rocks along the shoreline to obtain fresh water, giving the area its name, Batu Pahat.

The act of chiseling the rock has become symbolic, representing the town’s resilience and its historical connection to the sea. Historically, Batu Pahat served as an important coastal town, particularly during the reign of the Kesultanan Melaka, contributing to its strategic significance in controlling trade routes along the Selat Melaka.
